There’s More to Magnetism Than Certain Objects Being Attracted to Refrigerators

by: Patrick Brown

Chapters 6–9, share model lessons for putting the explore-before-explain mindset into practice using either a POE (Predict, Observe, and Explain) or 5E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate) instructional sequence. This chapter explores a phenomenon related to the lesson title—“why do certain objects stick to the refrigerator?”—and begins with an engagement activity that uses formative assessments to evaluate students’ ideas about magnets. The chapter includes many connections to the three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Teacher background information, standards, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Author, Introduction, and Index.
