Traveling the Inquiry Continuum: Learning Through Teacher Action Research

by: Alyssia Martinez-Wilkinson

This chapter addresses the More Emphasis on Teaching and the Content and Inquiry Standards from the National Science Education Standards (NSES). Using the knowledge gained through the Community of Excellence in Mathematics and Science (CEMS) program, the author changed the approach to teaching science—more focused on student understanding and use of scientific knowledge, ideas, and inquiry process. This chapter features a laboratory experiment format—“Do-It-Yourself” (DIY)—that guided students in active and extended scientific inquiry. Throughout the chapter the focus is on doing more investigations in order to develop understanding, ability, values of inquiry, and knowledge of science content.
