Weather or Not? Should We Rebuild in Twisterville?

by: Sami Kahn

In this lesson, suggested for grades K-3, students are introduced to tornadoes through a picture book. They make observations using water-filled bottles that function as “Tornadoes in a Bottle” when they create a swirling motion and evaluate the accuracy of this model to reinforce the idea that models can never be completely accurate. They explore and measure wind by making a Ping-Pong ball anemometer, which helps them think about the importance of having a standard scale for weather phenomena. Finally, students engage in a class activity about whether their town should rebuild after a destructive tornado. Before beginning the lesson, we recommend reading Units I and IV, which are included in this book selection. A list of materials, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessments, references, and resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Dedication, About the Author, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
