If you do any activities in your classroom that involve any object that can penetrate the skin, you should know the legal regulations that are involved. This brief article discusses how "sharps" should be cared for and how their use can be made safer. Using the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standards as reference, this article defines what a "sharp" is and further states what the "duty of maintenance" is, something that teachers are responsible for. It also suggest that guidelines for using sharps are listed in the school/district's Science Safety Plans. This article is short, easy to read, and helps teachers understand their liabilities better when using sharps in their classroom.
