This case study provides a section that describes the discovery of stainless steel. The creation of a new kind of alloy was an accidental discovery that reshaped the world. In this lesson, students will learn about the discovery and analyze microscopic images of steel and stainless steel and design an experiment to determine the conditions needed for oxidation to take place. Finally, students will design a product that uses stainless steel to solve a real-world problem. This case can be used as a way to integrate engineering into a lesson on chemical and physical properties, oxidation reactions, balancing chemical equations, and electrolytes. A materials list, teacher notes, teacher background information, safety notes, standards, assessment, resources, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Authors, Acknowledgments, Introduction, Appendix, Image Credits, and Index.
