Visual Literacy: Next Steps

by: Jo Anne Vasquez, Michael W. Comer, and Frankie Troutman

In this chapter the authors show that “being literate” is no longer limited to reading and writing. Literacy has come to include much more, including the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate in a variety of forms. Visual literacy includes both a process for learning and an expansion of the concept of text that includes visual images. Written text and visual images constitute the platform to help all students learn. Giving our “digital natives” visual literacy tools, helps them organize the information they need to learn and retain. This can be one of the greatest learning gifts science teachers provide for their students.
