Setting the Stage By Modeling

by: Wendy Saul, Angela Kohnen, Alan Newman, and Laura Pearce

Literacy professionals often think about the connection between reading and writing. How does reading impact the ability to write and think? What do competent writers notice when they read? In this chapter, the authors suggest a systematic approach, encouraging teachers to consciously choose, name, and track the kinds of things they are modeling. In order to get started, the authors have listed a number of paths you may wish to embark upon as a reader; each is tied to particular aspects of science journalism and science literacy.
