From Concepts to Principles to Processes to Equations

by: Norman LaFave

There is a tendency for students to misunderstand order and priorities when learning advanced mathematics and physical science. Many times students become so focused on the equations that they fail to comprehend the concepts and principles that underlie them. In this chapter, the author reviews the correct order for learning in mathematics and physical science. Failure to learn these aspects in the correct order usually results in deficiencies and naive conceptions in a student’s understanding of the material. Teachers must make sure their planned lessons follow this correct order so these deficiencies can be avoided.
