Science Without Numbers: Searching for Patterns

by: John Haysom

Searching for patterns is often the very beginning of sense making. We do it all the time. Scientists try to find patterns in their observations, then understand how these patterns are connected. For example, the way you go about cracking a code is similar to a scientist’s search. You begin by looking at the code carefully, then try to tease out the patterns—letters that occur frequently, words or combinations of letters that recur—and then make guesses about how the patterns are linked and test your theories. This chapter presents some interesting observations in searching for patterns.
