Where Do You Find the Earth’s Plates?

by: Page Keeley and Laura Tucker

The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about Earth’s plates. The probe is designed to find out where students think tectonic plates are located. Earth is composed of several major, large tectonic plates and several smaller ones. These plates are made up of rigid rock from the lithosphere, which consists of Earth’s crust and the uppermost mantle. This probe is best used with grades 6–12, and it is important students understand that the probe is asking where the plates are found. A materials list, teacher background information, references, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Introduction, and Index.
