In Which Direction Will the Water Swirl?

by: Page Keeley and Laura Tucker

The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about the Coriolis effect, which describes how rotating objects are deflected and helps explain the movement of large fluid masses. The probe is designed to find out whether students recognize how scale and Earth’s rotation affect the behavior of fluids. It is best used with grades 6–12, and should be used when students are learning about global wind patterns or ocean circulation. A materials list, teacher background information, references, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Introduction, and Index.
