by: Nancy C. Patterson, Gillian H. Roehrig, Barbara Austin, and Julie A. Luft

Quality induction programs are needed for science teachers. This chapter describes one program—Alternative Support for Induction Science Teachers (ASIST)—developed specifically for beginning science teachers based upon their expressed and demonstrated needs. ASIST has several important components. Two of these components—its discipline-based and reflective orientations—are discussed in this chapter, following a brief overview of induction programs.
