This assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about energy and chemical bonds and is designed to find out how students think about the release of energy involved in chemical bonding. It is best used with grades 9–12, and it may help to provide an everyday example of a reaction, such as the burning of a fuel. The probe is provided in English and Spanish.
