This assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about transfer of energy. It is designed to reveal whether students recognize that whenever there is a decrease in energy of a system, there is an increase in energy somewhere else. It is best used with grades 4–12. If used with elementary students, the emphasis should be on tracking energy, such as what happens to the energy in the soup and where does the heat go, without expecting elementary students to use conservation of energy reasoning. This probe encompasses several conceptual ideas—heat, transfer of energy, dissipation of heat, and conservation of energy. The probe is provided in English and Spanish. A materials list, teacher notes, standards, assessment, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, Preface, Acknowledgments, Dedication, About the Authors, Introduction, and Index.
